How heavy is too heavy for a period?

Doctors treat a period as heavy when it gets in the way of your daily life or comes with certain signs. The NHS lists needing to change a pad or tampon every 1 to 2 hours, a period lasting more than 7 days, and blood clots larger than about 2.5cm (roughly the size of a 10p coin). The German Federal Ministry of Health's portal puts a number on it: losing more than 80 ml of blood in a period. That is almost impossible to judge by eye, so how often you change protection is the practical sign. This page cannot tell you whether your own bleeding counts as heavy; it can tell you what is worth noticing and what to take to a doctor.

NHS, MedlinePlus and the German Federal Ministry of Health list these among the reasons a period can be heavy:

  • Hormonal imbalance. MedlinePlus names it as a common cause, and the German portal points to hormonal changes around perimenopause in particular.
  • Fibroids and polyps. Growths in or on the womb can stop it contracting as it should after the lining is shed, according to the German portal.
  • Endometriosis and adenomyosis. Both are on the NHS list of causes.
  • Hormonal contraception. MedlinePlus lists birth control pills and IUDs, and the German portal names the hormonal IUD. If bleeding after an IUD is what you are asking about, see whether IUD bleeding stops you praying.
  • PCOS, large weight changes and infections. MedlinePlus includes polycystic ovary syndrome, a weight change of more than 10 pounds, and infections of the womb or cervix.
  • Bleeding disorders. The NHS names conditions such as Von Willebrand disease, and MedlinePlus lists clotting disorders.
  • Some medicines. The NHS mentions anticoagulants (blood thinners) and certain chemotherapy drugs.

The NHS also notes that, rarely, womb cancer is behind heavy periods. That is not a reason to assume the worst, but it is part of why persistent heavy bleeding is looked into rather than put up with. MedlinePlus adds that treatment aimed at the cause is often effective quickly.

Why it matters beyond the inconvenience. The NHS lists heavy periods as a common cause of iron deficiency anaemia, whose symptoms include tiredness, shortness of breath and paler than usual skin. The German portal describes the same pattern: weakness, fatigue, paleness and cold hands. If you feel worn out through your period and after it, tiredness around your period covers the other common reasons, and a GP can check your iron with a full blood count.

When to talk to a doctor. The NHS says to see a GP if heavy periods are affecting your life, if you have had them for a long time, if you have severe period pain, or if you bleed between periods. MedlinePlus advises contacting your provider if you pass large clots or soak through a pad or tampon every hour for 2 to 3 hours in a row. If you feel faint, breathless or very unwell, get urgent care rather than waiting for an appointment. For ordinary heavy periods, the NHS says a GP may start with options such as a hormonal coil (IUS), tranexamic acid or anti-inflammatory painkillers, so it is worth asking rather than assuming nothing can help.

The worship question is separate. A heavy period, or bleeding that runs on past your usual days, raises its own question for prayer and fasting. Whether it is still hayd is not decided by how heavy it is or by what a doctor finds; how scholars tell istihadah from hayd explains the signs they use. A doctor answers questions about your body, and those signs answer questions about your worship. Neither replaces the other. If what you are really asking is how many days a cycle should run, how long a cycle should be covers the range.

It is far easier to describe heavy bleeding to a doctor with dates than from memory. Logging when each period starts and ends shows whether this month is a one-off or a pattern; see what to look for in a period tracker built for Muslim women. Nisaa logs your start and end dates cycle after cycle and is free to download on the [App Store](https://apps.apple.com/app/id6756938661).

If the problem is length rather than flow, see why your period is lasting more than 7 days.
