Yes. Once your bleeding has actually ended, you are in the state of major impurity that ghusl lifts, and the Qur'an gives that state the same concession as Janabah: if you cannot find water, or cannot use it without harm, you make tayammum with clean earth and pray. When you can reach water again, you make ghusl, and the prayers you already prayed stand.
What the texts say
- The Qur'an: “If you are ill or on a journey, or one of you has come from the toilet, or you have touched women, and you find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe your faces and your hands with it.” (al-Ma'idah 5:6; the same ruling is in al-Nisa 4:43). Scholars apply this to hayd because ghusl after it lifts the same major impurity that ghusl after Janabah lifts, so the same concession carries over.
- Abu Dharr (Radi'Allahu 'Anhu) reported that the Prophet (Salla Allahu 'Alayhi Wa Sallam) said: “Clean earth is the purifier of the Muslim, even if he does not find water for ten years. When he finds water, let him touch his skin with it.” (Narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi; al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan sahih.) The second half is the part that matters for you: tayammum carries you through, and ghusl is still owed once water is available.
- 'Imran ibn Husayn (Radi'Allahu 'Anhu) reported that the Prophet (Salla Allahu 'Alayhi Wa Sallam) saw a man standing apart who had not prayed with the people. The man said he had Janabah and no water. The Prophet said: “Use clean earth, it is enough for you.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.)
When tayammum is allowed
- Your bleeding must really have ended. Tayammum stands in for ghusl, and ghusl is only due once you are pure. If you are unsure, see how to know your period has ended first. Tayammum does not make a woman who is still bleeding pure.
- There is no water, or using it would harm you. That covers a journey with no water within reach, and illness or a wound where water would make the condition worse. 'Amr ibn al-'As (Radi'Allahu 'Anhu) made tayammum instead of ghusl on a bitterly cold night on the expedition of Dhat al-Salasil, fearing for his life, and led the prayer. The Prophet (Salla Allahu 'Alayhi Wa Sallam) heard of it and did not object. (Narrated by Abu Dawud; al-Bukhari mentions it without a full chain.) He relied on the words “do not kill yourselves” (al-Nisa 4:29). A real fear of harm counts; plain reluctance because the water is cold or the bathroom is inconvenient does not.
- You have looked for water as far as is reasonable. The schools differ on how far you must search, so a nearby tap, a neighbour's bathroom or a way to warm the water comes first if it is within reach.
How to make it
Intend tayammum to lift the impurity of hayd, say Bismillah, strike the earth (or a surface of dust, stone or soil) with both palms, and wipe the face and the hands. This is based on the hadith of 'Ammar ibn Yasir (Radi'Allahu 'Anhu), in which the Prophet (Salla Allahu 'Alayhi Wa Sallam) told him it was enough to strike the ground with his hands, blow on them, and wipe his face and hands. (Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.) Then pray.
Where the four schools differ
- How far the hands are wiped. The Hanafis and Shafi'is wipe the arms up to the elbows, with two strikes. The Malikis and Hanbalis hold that one strike and wiping the face and hands to the wrists is enough, as in the hadith of 'Ammar.
- How many prayers one tayammum covers. The Hanafis and Hanbalis hold that tayammum, like wudu, lasts until something breaks it or water becomes available, so one tayammum can serve several prayers. The Shafi'is and Malikis hold that a fresh tayammum is made for each obligatory prayer, once its time has begun.
- What breaks it. In every school, finding usable water breaks tayammum, as does anything that would break wudu. Bleeding that returns also puts you back in hayd.
Follow the school you normally follow rather than mixing parts of several.
After you reach water
Make ghusl as soon as you can; see how to perform ghusl after your period. You do not repeat the prayers you prayed with tayammum. What you do not yet have is the full state of purity, so the things the schools reserve for after ghusl wait for it; see intimacy before ghusl for that question. On a journey the same applies, and what to do if your period begins while travelling covers the rest. To know which prayers are still owed at the moment you became pure, see which prayers you make when your period ends.
If you are recording when your bleeding stopped so you can settle all of this, a period tracker for Muslim women that lets you log the time and what you saw makes it much easier.
